Pooran engages beast mode as Omarzai leaks 36 in an over

Pooran goes berserk.

West Indies flogged Afghanistan in their final group game to qualify to the Super 8 stages of the 2024 T20 World Cup with the wind on their back. In what’s been a rare occurrence in this marquee event, West Indies put on a typically terrifying show with the bat before restricting Afghanistan with ease.

92/1 by West Indies is the top score in the Powerplay in T20 World Cup history, bettering Netherlands’ 91/1 against Ireland during their impressive 190-run chase in Sylhet in 2014. Overall, it happens to be the fourth-best powerplay total in the Men’s T20Is.

As many as 36 runs came off the fourth over of the innings bowled by Azmatullah Omarzai, the joint-record and the fifth such occasion in T20Is. It was the second 36-run over in T20 World Cup history after Yuvraj Singh’s epoch-making feat against Stuart Broad in Durban in 2007. Nicholas Pooran scored 26 off the 36 runs in the Omarzai over with the help of two fours and three sixes, while the other 10 runs came via extras.
