Hammer blow for Rajasthan Royals as key spinner withdraws from IPL 2024

Adam Zampa has withdrawn from the Indian Premier League 2024 at the eleventh hour due to personal reasons. The Australian leg-spinner had been retained by Rajasthan Royals ahead of December’s auction in Dubai on a contract worth INR 1.5 crore which amounts to A$273,000 approximately.

Zampa has previously turned up for Royal Challengers Bengaluru and the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant at the IPL, bagging 29 wickets in his 20 appearances in the competition, spread across four editions.

Last-minute pullouts a thorn in the franchises’ flesh

Recently, the trend of English players withdrawing from commitments citing personal reasons caused resentment among the IPL franchises. Kolkata Knight Riders took a hit as Jason Roy withdrew from the upcoming season citing workload management and the need to spend time with his family. KKR replaced Roy with another England batter in Phil Salt.

Fast bowler Gus Atkinson withdrew from IPL 2024 after England cricket board wanted to keep his body fresh ahead of a busy season. Mark Wood, who played the Test series in India, pulled out of IPL 2024 after Lucknow Super Giants bought him for Rs 7.5 crore. The franchises argue that such unexpected and sudden pullouts disrupt their auction planning. Their top brasses are considering taking up the issue with the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

England batter Harry Brook had also withdrawn from IPL 2024 to be with his grieving family following the death of his grandmother in February. Capitals had finished ninth in team teams last season, having won only five out of 14 games under David Warner’s captaincy. They will be led in IPL 2024 by the resurgent Rishabh Pant, who was given clearance to play as a wicketkeeper-batter by the BCCI after recovering from injuries suffered in a horrific car accident in December 2022.
