Rohit Sharma brings up fifty with signature pull shot

After an abhorrent batting display in the first innings which consigned them to the lowest-ever Test total by any team in Asia, India are jostling to get back into the contest as they got off to a decent start in the second innings of the first Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru.

With just over an hour to negotiate till the tea break, Rohit Sharma (27*) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (29*) added 57* to lead India’s reply after New Zealand secured a gargantuan first innings lead of 356.

With a tall enough deficit of 299 and seven sessions left in the Test, India have their backs against the wall. The next session of the day has to be an excellent one for the home side, if they are to head into the fourth day with a shot at salvaging the game.

Brief scores: India 46 and 57/0 (Yashasvi Jaiswal 29*, Rohit Sharma 27*) trail New Zealand 402 (Rachin Ravindra 134, Devon Conway 91; Ravindra Jadeja 3-72) by 299 runs.
