Shoaib Bashir bowls England to series win with excellent fifer

The 20-year-old Shoaib Bashir finished with figures of 5 for 41 in 11.1 overs as West Indies – chasing an improbable 385 to draw the series level – nosedived from a comfortable 61/0 shortly after Tea to be rolled over for 143.

Though he only made his debut in February on England’s tour of India, this was Bashir’s third fifer in five Tests, and his maiden on home soil – surpassing the recently retired James Anderson as the youngest England bowler to accomplish the remarkable feat.

Shortly after the Trent Bridge Test came to an end, England confirmed an unchanged squad for next week’s third Test at Edgbaston, with the uncapped Dillon Pennington and Matthew Potts once again in the mix alongside the spare batter, Dan Lawrence. Though captain Ben Stokes kept his cards close to his chest on whether Wood in particular might be given a break keeping in mind his workload in this Test, he was happy with the team’s overall development, as England wrapped up their first series win since the tour of Pakistan in December 2022.
