Shubman Gill retires hurt on 79 due to cramps

Gill retires hurt.

Shubman Gill has been struggling for a while with cramps and now he decides enough is enough. He was looking in great touch, but has to walk out retired hurt and is replaced in the middle by Shreyas Iyer. Will be interesting to see if he comes out to bat later if required.

Shubman was sedate to begin with but took over after Rohit Sharma’s departure. He dealt in boundaries and brought up a stunning 41-ball fifty.

Rohit was batting on 45 off 22 at one point but one quiet over from Trent Boult unsettled the Indian capatain. Southee used the offcutter and Rohit completely mistimed the heave. The ball went high up in the sky but Williamson took a superb catch to snatch the big wicket.

Electing to bat first, Rohit made a statement at his home ground, not putting a cap on the fearlessness that he has exhibited pretty much throughout ICC World Cup 2023 to get India off to a flier more often than not. The Indian captain took on Trent Boult to smash him for a couple of boundaries in the very first over of the semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The hosts had raced to 70 for no loss after eight overs as a result of Rohit’s sustained aggression.
