Trapped in front, Joe Root perishes for a silver duck

Root departs.

New Zealand struck early in the second ODI at Rose Bowl as Jonny Bairstow looked to work an inswinger across the line only for the leading edge to fly towards cover where Santner leaped up and took a fantastic one-handed catch with his left hand. Joe Root perished for a duck, trying to flick across the line.

England found themselves neck deep in trouble as Ben Stokes threw his wicket away. He gave Boult the charge and decided to take the aerial route, but failed to get enough elevation and ended up handing over an easy catch to mid-off. The departure of three England mainstays within the first PowerPlay put New Zealand firmly in the ascendancy. The rebuilding phase is underway for England.

The Kiwis managed to level the four-match T20I series 2-2, and went on to win the first ODI comfortably as Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell scored masterful centuries to boss the 292-run chase, sealing an eight-wicket victory.
