Shakib Al Hasan to lead Bangladesh in 2023 Asia Cup, World Cup

Shakib appointed as captain.

Shakib Al Hasan has been appointed Bangladesh’s ODI captain for the Asia Cup and World Cup, BCB President Nazmul Hasan confirmed on Friday, August 11.

“We have appointed Shakib as the captain for Asia Cup and World Cup. The World Cup and Asia Cup squad will be announced tomorrow. The selectors will pick a squad of 17 members,” Nazmul told the media on Friday. The post went vacant after Tamim Iqbal decided to relinquish captaincy on August 3. Shakib, an experienced campaigner, will now take over the reins with immediate effect in the lead up to the two global events.

Nazmul also confirmed that Litton would continue to serve as the vice-captain of the side and will lead in Shakib’s absence. However, leadership decisions for the long run have been put in cold storage for now.

The 36-year-old, who is currently Bangaldesh’s Test and T20I skipper, has previously led the Asian Tigers in 50-overs cricket, including at the World Cup in 2011. Nazmul stated that the selection panel took a bit of time in naming the squad as they were not sure about the captain.
