Nathan Lyon gets Joe Root stumped to leave England at 129/4

Lyon strikes.

Joe Root’s entertaining innings comes to an end. Looking to go down the track against Nathan Lyon, he was undone by the cunning off-spinner and missed the ball completely as Alex Carey completed an easy stumping. England are in a spot of bother at 129/4.

Root was the second man to depart on the fourth morning. Pat Cummins had produced a brute of an inswinging yorker to castle Ollie Pope after Root blazed off the blocks with a series of reverse ramps. While the England lynchpin couldn’t lay bat on ball in the first attempt against Pat Cummins, the next two endeavors off Scott Boland fetched a boundary and a six.

On Day 3, England dislodged the Australian tail quickly after sending centurion Usman Khawaja back. The lower-order couldn’t quite tackle the short ball ploy, and the lead that seemed likely for the visitors at one stage didn’t quite materialise.

James Anderson gave England an early breakthrough in the form of half-centurion Alex Carey early on the third morning, going right through his defence after Jonny Bairstow shelled another chance. Ollie Robinson brought an end to Khawaja’s hard-working knock, dismantling the off-stump with a pinpoint yorker. He danced down premeditatedly, then tried to squeeze it out but missed. The southpaw walked back to a standing ovation from the Edgbaston crowd after scoring 141 off 321 balls, his maiden ton in England.
