Zimbabwe’s series-levelling victory over Bangladesh in the second T20I bore witness to a perplexing incident when the stump got dislodged from its position just as the ball was being bowled, leading to presumptions of a hit-wicket dismissal. Only later did replays show that the stump pegged back by itself and the batsman was nowhere at fault.
The incredible feat transpired during the 18th over of Bangladesh’s chase with Mohammad Saifuddin on strike. He heaved the ball towards long-on and the Zimbabwe players erupted into an appeal for hit-wicket, under the impression that the tail-ender had erroneously toppled the sticks. The umpires sent it upstairs, but replays confirmed that the bails just fell off courtesy of the wind. Bizarre moment, indeed.
