Ben Stokes survived a leg-before review by South Africa in a Simon Harmer over and needed some medical attention too as he clutched to his left knee after taking a single. But he was up and running soon and struck a couple of elegant straight drives off Lungi Ngidi. Ben Foakes was busy at the other end, picking up regular singles and twos, while he also found the fence from time to time. There was a hint of purchase for the spinners late in the session, with Maharaj going up for a leg-before appeal against Foakes. The keeper-batter was adjudged out but managed to reverse the onfield decision as replays showed the ball had pitched just outside leg.
